LWSP Move Well Writing

Competition intent:

  • understand pupil’s relationship with movement and physical activity
  • help pupils to reflect on what movement, physical activity and sport means to them

Competition Outline:

The competition is a writing competition that is aimed at KS2 but could be completed with any year group and can use any genre of writing; we want to give schools the flexibility to either integrate the task into your literacy curriculum or do it as a one-off piece of work.

Schools will be asked to submit their best 2 pieces of work via email to jill.lwsp@leedsrhinosfoundation.org by the end of this term (Friday 4 April) and we will send out more details of how to do this nearer the time.

All the winning pieces of work will be collated to produce a LWSP Move Well book which will contain the children’s work – all children who have work in the book will get a free copy.

Competition Resources:

The YST have kindly allowed us access to some resources which will hopefully support you with the competition in your schools. Please note that these resources were not originally created as a competition even though the resource overview does suggest it can be used in this way. The resources are also part of a pilot piece of work for the YST, and so they are by no means the polished article- and it is recognised that there is a need for a more child friendly design as a next development.

Nevertheless, the resources provide us with a useful stimulus for the competition and the YST will welcome any feedback from you.

Move Well: A letter to movement lesson plan

The resources are provided by way of a stimulus, a starting foundation, elements you can pick and choose or as a structure you choose to lift and follow closely.

  • What it means to Move Well writing resource overview- A summary of the writing resource. This provides the aims and how the resource is structured and can be used flexibly in your school.
  • An example lesson/session outline with supporting slide deck  (editable)- This resource provides a suggested lesson/session outline with a specific focus on pupils writing a letter to movement. The lesson can be delivered as is or adapted accordingly. The supporting slide deck is editable so that it can be lifted into your own lesson input approaches or you can choose to lift some of the tasks and resources into other approaches to delivering the competition.
  • Useful videos- a range of videos that bring to life what a ‘relationship’ with movement can look and feel like. These can be used to help you to launch the competition, as a stimulus to get pupils thinking about and planning their own letter.

Here are the video links to embed to your platform:

  • Useful tasks- the physical literacy toolkit provides tasks that although created for individuals and organisations working with children and young people, can be adapted to be used directly with young people. The toolkit can be accessed and downloaded via the Youth Sport Trust website
